
Many of my friends and family members struggle with the problem of depression and the on going effects it has on relationships, physical health and our emotions. Many people suffer from depression and may not know it or the signs of depression.
According to the National Institute of Mental Health, symptoms of depression may include the following:
- Difficulty concentrating, remembering details, and making decisions
- Fatigue and decreased energy
- Feelings of guilt, worthlessness, and/or helplessness
- Feelings of hopelessness and/or pessimism
- Insomnia, early-morning wakefulness, or excessive sleeping
- Irritability, restlessness
- Loss of interest in activities or hobbies once pleasurable, including sex
- Overeating or appetite loss
- Persistent aches or pains, headaches, cramps, or digestive problems that do not ease even with treatment
- Persistent sad, anxious, or "empty" feelings
- Thoughts of suicide, suicide attempts
Take some time to talk with a good friend, make exercise a daily routine in your day, and find time for laughter and joy always. If you struggle in any of these areas of your life, check with your doctor because you might be suffering from depression and treatment is vital to feeling better. Remember, depression can happen to anyone and it won't go away by itself.
